The Home Beast

Installation

The Home Beast was created during the artist's residency at the EKWC (European Ceramic Work Centre) in 2022. In this work, he explores the concept of the stranger and the fear his image evokes and how we can overcome this fear of the unknown. According to Maksoud, a real diversity conversation is only possible if we discuss the unknown with each other openly and look 'the beast' in the eye. This is exactly what he does in this sculpture; he brings a group of clay experiments into dialogue with other (foreign) materials. In his relief sculpture, he creates a sensory experience - sounds, smells, images and other sensations - with which he tries to paint a picture of a new reality, stripped of what we know. The inclusion of the foreign elements in the work leads to a different, new aesthetic, freed from the familiar.
